Triathlon: Multisport

For those that like an extra challenge and are willing to combine swimming, cycling and running, there is triathlon.
Triathlons can be done individually or as a team, in a range of different formats. From short distance (e.g. 500m swim, 20km bike and 5 km run) to the full, or Iron distance of 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and a marathon (42.2 km) run.

Within the Unilever Vitality Triathletes we have experience with all distances, as individuals and as teams. You will find us here, but also with the bikers, crawlers and dashers.

Want to know more? Just look around at the site and get in touch with one of the team members. Already an experienced triathlete? Welcome to join and share your experience!

Team triathlon: Laura's view

By Laura Stoop
Last Saturday (1 September) two Unilever teams participated in the 1st edition of the 1/8 Binnenmaas triathlon. The six team members all did one part of the 1/8 triathlon.

In our men's team Martin Teley started with 500 meter swimming. He finished this part in 8.05 minutes. A job well done! Boudewijn Hollebrands cycled really fast for 20km and finished in 30.59 minutes. Julius de Folter did the last part of the triathlon and ran 5km in only 17.40 minutes! This team finished the 1/8 triathlon with a team total of 00:59:39 and won first place!! Not only they were first in the category men’s team, they also won first place in the category business teams. Congratulations to this incredible fast team!

In our women's team Christi Fennemore started with swimming and finished after 10.33 minutes. Tamara Vieveen did the cycling part of the triathlon. Unfortunately she had some troubles with her bike at the beginning of the track, so she cycled 20km with a loose bicycle chain. After 54.19 minutes she made it to the changing area and handed over to Laura Stoop. She ran 5km in 22.45 minutes. This team ended with a team total of 01:31:17. No prizes for them but the consolation prize for having trouble with the bike.

Everyone enjoyed this wonderful and sportive day! The whole race was perfectly organized and the teams were lucky with sunny (not too warm) weather. Special thanks for support to Jaap, Margaretha, Gijsbert and Kees!!
An impression of this triathlon experience is captured in a nice video

Team Triathlon Binnenmaas

By Julius de Folter
On Saturday 1 September two teams of the Unilever Vitatlity Triathletes participated in the 1/8 Triathlon Binnenmaas: 500 m swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running.
Under sunny but not too warm conditions the ladies team (Christi, Tamara and Laura) and the gents team (Martin, Boudewijn and Julius) started in Wave 2. None of us had any triathlon experience!

Our fast Eindhoven swimmer Martin quickly found the rythm in the Binnenmaas waters in between the approximate 130 contenders and he managed to stay out of the turmoil of the big crowd and get a position in the first group. He came out of the water as ninth swimmer (of the combined wave 1 and 2), clearly recognisable on the painted 505 on his arm. In the tranisition zone he handed the timing chip to Boudewijn and it was clear that he was the fastest of all relay swimmers: with a time of 8:05 he gave the team a minute lead over the first follower.
Boudewijn dashed to his bike, grabbed it and ran through the transition zone with his bike at hand and once passed the starting line he jumped up and started pedalling as if his life depended on it. Only a month ago Boudewijn was asked to be the teams biker, replacing Anja. However, he did properly prepare with dedicated training hours and a proper testing of the course up front. He saw his preparation resulting in a smashing time of 30:59, quite a bit faster than his target.
Despite his fast cycling, the Dordrecht team had taken the lead through an exceptional fast bike ride. It was clear that UVT-1 would battle for 1st or 2nd place. Julius started the final leg of the triathlon run more than a minute behind the Dordrecht runner. It reminded him of our annual handicap race, where the fastest runners start latest and the slower runners get a head-start. Julius sprinted out of the transition zone and quickly he had his eyes on two runners, amongst which the leading relay runner. In the following 2 km one by one he overtook them. In the lead he kept the pace high and dashed to the finish. 300 meters before the line Martin and Boudewijn were waiting for him to go together to the line and the arms went into the air when they claimed victory! with a time of 59:35 inside the target of 1 hour that trainer/coach Kees had given them. During the day only 6 individual triathletes managed to be faster.

But bussiness had not finished yet, since the ladies team deserved some extra cheering and encouragement. Together with coach Jaap, with Margaretha and Gijsbert there was a bit of an afterparty during which the prices could be collected.

All in all a great first look into the world of triathlon and a very successful event!

Individual Olympic Distance race

Our UV-Triathlete Kees van Malssen participated in the same weekend in the Olympic distance Triathlon in Amersfoort. After 1500m swimming, 43 km cycling and 10 km running, he crossed the finish line in 2:39:31
